Synthesis Monolith Console No.2

For Hongjie Yang’s Synthesis Monolith series for Gallery ALL, he sculpts large forms from aluminum and bronze in which volumes of metallic rubble appear to dissolve as they reveal the precise, mirrored surfaces integrated within. The key to Yang’s work is that within both the polished facets and the rough surfaces, we see a reflection of ourselves.

It is through a transformation that we find enlightenment. The examination of this idea that lies at the heart of the work of Hongjie Yang – metamorphosis, the process of altering form, a change in nature.

Humans have been a part of the ecosystem of the earth for many thousands of years. However, it is only recently that many began to construe the acts of humankind as being something separate from what we call the natural world. This view denies a very fundamental truth – that we are and always will be a part of the whole. There are indeed forces which move in opposition to one another but are contained within the larger system of growth and decline, life and death, light and dark, order and chaos, the dualities of existence. It is the convergence of these forces, Synthesis, that Yang explores in his work.

Tan’s practice, since graduating from the China Academy of Art, has been focused on the ancient technique of lost-wax casting. This ancient foundry process has created an intersection between Tan’s interest in heritage casting techniques and organic forms. The forms designed by the interior designer vary from being environmental to be figurative.

This modern console table brings together the botanical and human motifs most explicitly. The tension between the two references causes the works to become abstracted and take on a slightly surreal quality, whilst maintaining functionality. His practice continues to focus on the intersection between the craft of lost-wax casting and the creation of organic forms, at once thought-provoking and beautiful.

MAD Martian Console Table

The MAD Martian collection began with a question: What would the Chinese colonization of a Martian planet look like? This naturally led to more questions such as at what point does survival stop and architecture begin? Once survival is assured, what memory of Earth or love for their new home would these interplanetary colonizers recreate first? The MAD Martian collection is the result of Ma Yansong’s meditation on these issues.

This modern console table is another take on the mountain range design articulated in the dining table. It is designed to accompany the table as a gentler landscape. Manufactured out of CNC’d aluminium, the making process involved a mixture of precision machining and hand polishing.

“I have never been to the Mars…what will we discover when we get there; red landscape, quiet horizon, frozen glaciers? Probably all is as beautiful, in its own way, as the Earth was thousands of years ago. I want to bring to Mars the Earth landscape, as I imagined it, in my room as a child.” — Ma Yansong, founder of MAD Architects

This luxury console table is from the same collection as the console table above (Lotus Collection). Here, Tan decided to show the melting process instead of a tree branch. In both cases, he was environmental and tried to show natural processes.

Chulan Kwak, inspired by Caoshu movement, restructured the 2D stroke which seemed to run the blank space rhythmically, into the 3D structure. He has created ‘Cursive Structure’ that functions as well as creating a contrast between the object and margin of space that changes according to the viewpoint.

Through the combination of the digital tool and craftsmanship, he was able to create solid forms of free curves in the real world, such as those made in the virtual space.

The unexpected outcome of the uniqueness of materials and techniques handled by Chulan Kwak is reminiscent of the dialectic process of harmony that goes beyond the division of genres. And his works, which make a new harmony rather than a conflict, seem to relate to the overall harmony of organic design, which does not exist only as a single outcome, but also in relation to others.

Unique Mix-Wood Console Table

This unique console table by Po Shun Leung was originated from his dreaming of ocean liners. When the sirens screamed in London during the Second World War, the Leung family headed underground for the deep shelters to avoid German bombs. To escape the dangers in 1944, his father sent him as a 3-year-old child to live with a carpenter in the countryside until the end of the war. The carpenter had a hobby of making model ocean liners. One of them, a majestically long vessel filled his small parlour.

In 1964, Po immigrated to Mexico after receiving an architecture degree cum laude in London from the Architectural Association. His architectural models were important for clients to decide whether to make the projects possible. In Mexico Po used to paint and had exhibitions, but he found that wood does not answer back in the way canvas does. Canvas loses its life very easily. You can work on wood indefinitely, strip it down and start all over again. 58 years later in California, that model wartime liner is still there to haunt Po’s way of creating art.
